Pre-Visit Reflections
I am nervous about the visit to the Old folks home as I have not been to any Old folks home only accompanied by several group members. I didnt know what to expect from the Old folks living there. But i am also feeling excited as i know what i am about to do will probably brighten someone's day up , or make their life a bit less monotonous. This helped calmed me down and open up to the elderly, taking the initiative to chat with them about their day to day lives.
Post Visit Reflections
The visit turned out to be alot more relaxed than i thought it was going to be. The elderly there are actually very wise and have alot of life experiences which they shared with me without any hesitation. They advised me on making the right choices in life and to stay on the right path.
However, i also feel pity for them as there is not much for them to do there at the old folks.It makes me realise just how important filial piety is, but it seems that filial piety is not a very important value in the modern day society as people tend to find the elderly as burdens and not assets. Our parents raised us from the day we were borned and i feel that the least we can do is to make sure we can care for them the same way they have cared for us by providing us with what we want and need. But there are also those who has no family and the old folks home takes care of them and that is very good, as the older the elderly get, the more they need help and the caretakers can do that. I also realise that although the elderly's daily needs are taken care of, they are generally not very happy with being cooped up all day long at the home. Also i would not send my parents or grandparents there as i feel that there should be more to life than being in the home all day long. The visit to the home has overall, made me a better person and realise the importance of family. -JiaXuan.
